As has been discussed, Gems being permanet earnings hold a hefty weight. Without going into too many details, augmentation hardly seems worth it, considering the bonus is lost when you trade weapons. If I am wrong, then nevermind, I only tried it once and seemed to notice that the upgrade did not carry over additional strength.
If this is the case, hard to believe it would be worth the risk of gem for anyone to use this feature.

The augmentation is lost when you upgrade yes, so most people do wait until they have max weapon/armor before augmenting.

I've also augmented a weapon right after having purchased it while knowing that I needed to upgrade my armor first before coming back to upgrading my weaponry... basically any time you plan on holding onto a weapon for a little this can become valuable...

I tend to only upgrade 2 or 3 times in any dragonkill cycle, so I will augment. I'm going to have the same weapon for several levels, so why not?
Then again, I get 20+ gems with every DK, so I always have spares and I'm at the point where my number of HPs is almost detrimental.

Augmentation is worth it because there are few ways of improving your attack and defense scores. The fact that it doesn't stay when ye change weapons should be obvious, although it would be nice if ye got slightly more money for it when ye traded it back... Gems can be spent on plenty of temporary things, and this is one of the better value ones IMHO.

But there is a risk. I augmented my armor once, got a downgrade and then again in hope of getting it back, and it went down again.
And when you sell it, you get less back for it.

While the downgrading is annoying, it's part of the thrill of doing it. "Am I gonna get screwed this time?" I'm fine with that. ;)

Well this makes complete sense. Still, that does make Augmentation ( a very rare event) worth the risk even less of the time.

I can understand that, and it could be that it is good if your strategy is different. I try to upgrade weaponry or armor almost every time I can, so I don’t keep it very long if I can help it.

Your stats must blow mine out of the water. Upgrading so few times is not even an option for me.
