One thing I miss from the original LORD that I was very fond of was flirting with and marrying other players... I know it's harder to code player/player interactions as there is more of a chance of abuse, but it's something I personally miss...
Any other thoughts?

I'm still laughing with the idea (in the good sense), but I suddenly realize that when I married (IRL) I had to make a very expensive gift.
Maybe a bag with, say, 50 gems? To prove the love, it must pain! ;)
And, to add a game benefit, you could receive buffs as defense in PVP (fields), very like Violet defenses you in the forest.
I'm still laughing, and I like the idea!

I do miss that option. I used to play LORD (tournament style) and one of the fun parts was flirting with other players. I know I've mentioned it before to MoonChilde, but he had other pressing concerns at that time (he'd just started his server and was working out the bugs.)
Ohhh. And we can have gift registries in the armor and weapon stores!! Yay!
Hmm.. Does this mean that there will be diamonds now as well as gems? For THE ring, of course!

I've seen that feature on many servers. I think it would cool to have it on the Central Server also.

It would certaintly add another element to roleplaying... is the system on other servers any good?

Could someone please explain how exactly the flirt and marry thing worked in LoRD?
I never played LoRD but I made a flirt and marriage script for LoGD. (I mentioned it at sourceforge forum but it is not translated into english yet.) My "gardenflirt" allows to flirt and to marry other players and violet and Seth are fully included in the action. But the flirtsystem itself isn't very good and I want to improve or rewrite it. Right now after 5 answered flirts (i.e. 10 flirts with 5 flirts per person) in row the two players marry. You can see who flirted with you and how often. Flirt with your wife to get the lovers protection. Flirt with others and you may lose your wife. You just can "flirt", there are no specific actions right now - that's what I want to change.
So how was that in LoRD?

The flirt options in lotgd are different from LORD, that much is sure. LORD Allowed you to send romantic mail (basically whatever you wanted to send or a tacky premade message if you did not write anything) and you could propose marriage through this. It also had the exact same flirt system in the inn up till the marriage part - That part and how the charm points are given & evaluated are different in the two games. Without giving game secrets I can say that I prefer the lotgd way.
As to the actual code in use right now, it does support marrying different people. This support is not being used however. There are several considerations to be made before enabling a feature that allows player interaction in a web based game. Ultimately, there is no way of preventing a semi-determined cheater from abusing such a system and marrying a secondary character. Since this game aspires to be easy to administer, such a function would create a security hole in it.
The other consideration at the time this issue was discussed was family friendliness itself. It was simply decided that this was not a burning issue at the time and would have to wait a considerable while as other areas were developed.

Several servers do have marry other player features.
And I do mean differant versions on each.
In fact I have leant parts of my own version to other servers including the flirt with spouse and list married couples of the realm snippets.
My version needs a bit of work for automatic player marry player. Although in use on my server, it is completed manually at this time. And is not ready for full implementation and is on the back burner for now.
Divorce is enabled and like irl expensive. lol.

Rax's Greystone Chapel 1.1 allows for automatic marry and divorce with a few other cool little options. I use a modded version of it on Legendgard and it works fairly well.
In the future there should be something a little more developed and story driven, but for the moment, it works fine.
You can grab a copy at the modder forums at

I don't expect it'll be in the .9.8 release, which is already fairly ambitious.

Marrying sounds cool. Perhaps some form of user detection could be used. Like in order to marry they both have to have different e-mail accounts, or different ip addresses, or both. When marrying both e-mail accounts are sent an e-mail asking for authentication.
Thats all I could think of.

I have a good idea. Don't give the players any benefits for marrying someone. That way, theres really no incentive for guys to make a secondary character to marry, unless he just really wants to have relations with himself.
I would personally be happy just to have a chick to flirt with.... =)

What could be more family friendly than marriage? :D

Have to disagree with you there regarding the needing different e-mail accounts or IP address thing. I live with my fiance and we both play (she plays as PsychoNurse). I don't see why we should be disadvantaged because we live together.
Don't take this personally Atlas, just voicing my opinion. :)

Unfortunately we can't see the two real people in your house, and have to assume it's one person at the keyboard.

Also - someone resurrected this thread and there is a one-year gap between two of the posts.
Marrying other players has since been heavily discussed elsewhere and it can't be done right now in a clean way (Imagine running from the dragon into the arms of Violet, when you're married to someone else). There are way too many pieces of code with Violet's name in it that aren't easily changed. Please read the other threads on it. The information in this thread that neXus posted is NOT correct.
