View Full Version : Limit on PVP?

I get a lot - and I mean a lot - of complaints about people being "targetted", i.e. being killed in PVP by the same people over and over again.

One possible solution would be to track PVPs to prevent repeat attacks.

Say, for example, the game would track the last 5-10 PVPs you did, and you would not be able to anyone on that list.

I'm not offering this as an upcoming change, and I certainly don't have any idea of how hard this would be to code, but we can at least throw this idea on the table and get some opinions.

Usually people are killed by the same people over and over again because they are staying in the same level range. Once out of that range, no more targetting. I.e. it's not personal, it's just that there is no one else to kill and those people are handy. On a small server, killing the ability to target everyone in your range would severely limit PvP fights. However, in larger games, that might not be the case, since the target base is so much larger. This would probably need to be something that can be toggled on or off, I would think. But, it's not a bad idea.

As someone who's probably been accused of this on the main server, I have some comments. I tend to attack the strongest player that I can find that I think I can beat, for reasons of my own. Since the player hierarchy is fairly static, this tends to be the same people over and over. I recently started mixing up and attacking some weaker players, but even if anyone with 5+ DKs got killed every night, they should easily be able to kill weaker players and get that experience back. I don't pick on anyone in particular (except clan members during the contest :) ), so I don't think it's especially unfair to anyone. It just makes it harder to get through the ranks to the top, because the weakest players get attacked the most.

On the mightye.org server it's a different ball game. There are about 10 players that can clear out the entire user list on any given day if they all play, and if the levels line up right. That's why MightyE lowered the experience loss to 2% on that server. That way, farmpersons can still have a chance to level up at a reasonable pace. This seems to have lessed the complaining greatly, since players probably don't care as much if somebody gets experience at their detriment, as long as the player doesn't lose too much in the process.

On the original topic of JCP's post: I would like to know when I view the player list in the fields how many times I'd killed a player recently. I tend to remember whether or not I've attacked certain players, but it's very unscientific. If I could see that I'd attacked a given player twice in the last week, and 15 times in the last month, I'd be less likely to attack them.

For the purposes of the clan competition, I'd rather not limit the number of times you can kill a given player. It might be a bit unfair to have a bunch of people attacking one player, so maybe only let us kill any given player 2 out of the last 10 kills then block it. First kill would make them a different color in the list (or some other indication), so we know that we're "on warning" until we've killed 10 other people. Then the second kill would block us from killing that person until we'd killed 9 others since the first kill. That way we could still kill someone 2 days in a row, but then we couldn't kill them again for a few days (depending on the number of PvPs you use, of course :D ).

Or maybe just limit it based on the clan (clan can only kill each person once a day), but that could get difficult to implement and it would be hard to come up with a solution that everyone likes.

I (and propably the rest of BAD also) feel that PVP is an essential part of the game and it should not be limited. I have been killed almost every day since I started playing and I don't mind. not logging off and on all the time also prevents you from getting killed more than once / day and the lost exp can easily be recovered with next days forest fights.

I was reading the clan contest thread on the general forum and Lady Dannon said "but killing others for points sure is fun". would it be possible to have some kind of kill counter? just a number in your bio that goes up by one every time you kill someone. you could also make it so that if you kill someone more than once in a few days it won't go up to encourage choosing other targets.

What a terrible suggestion, Booger! Why that kind of thing would just encourage outright slaughter and put the server into a frenzy of bloodlust as people tried to max out their kill counter!

Now that I come to think of it... Good suggestion. :>

Pesonally, I don't engage in PvP until just before each dragon kill. I generally make a rush for XP after level 12 or so. This isn't to say that I'm bothered by others who make a habit of it. Different playing styles suit different players. It's all a part of what keeps the game interesting.

I was messaged by a person who asked if it bothered me when they killed me more than once a week. My answer? Not at all.

I camp to the fields specifically to be killed. It helps slow my XP gain so that my weapons match my level. It only took one time of hitting 15 with a 6th level weapon to find out the drawbacks of *that* particular situtation. (I never camp with gold, though, so don't imagine you'll get rich by killing me :P )

I have to agree with Jariyah here. Being the only admin who opted out of MEC to be in GoT, and while doing my job here, having to log in and out several times a day, I know TMINE and BAD are getting rich off the points of killing me. Aggravating, yes...but not worth getting upset over.

I've been killed over and over by the same people (ahem, Fred) but 'tis not worth gettin' my knickers in a knot over. I did so once with someone, and shan't ever do it again. Sure, its annoying to wake up and find a dagger in your throat with the same signature on the love note every morning...but again with the its a game...with violent tendencies. Y'all knew that when you signed up for it.

So...slaughter on...share the love with as many people as ye can.

I think a Kill counter is a great idea, and wish that was a searchable count in the Hall of Fame.

Karissa, all is fair in love and contest ; ).

Besides when the contest was going on, I personally try to never kill the same person in a given Dragon Kill cycle. Most of the time I try to have a least 2 full days in between PVP'ing someone, however sometimes one has to make an exception. When I was much lower level I once got beaten down by the same two people twice in a 6 hour period and that is not sporting as they had no contest and it is not fun for the person getting slaughtered everytime. Obviously I do my fair share of PVP slaughter around here but I try my best to make it fun for others .... like in the last few days when every time I looked in the fields I saw Phantom...MrE...Dekion...Nexus....etc., after I killed them once there they were everytime I looked. I had a hard time shaking them ; )

I've had my own issues with that... it's not always a choice. I've been attacking fifo and healer for almost a week now, they're a few dragon kills behind me, but moving at the exact same speed as me, so I've been almost forced to kill them about half a dozen times each. I would have gone for others, but all others are either of the "too high" or "too low" category, so it's really suicide, waste a PvP or attack them thing... The choice in such situations is almost obvious for everyone...

On another server, there was major problems with this. I was killed by the same person night after night after night after night after night...She didn't even NEED to kill me. (Another people she knows she could have beaten could have given her way more experience and she knew it.)

I went into a slump of, probably, 6,000-10,000 EXP. Only reason I got out is generous people...and the girl left...

hhmm.

maybe limit pvp to a range of dks and only to levels equal or above (the latter I have placed on my server).

Though actual number range of dks is open to wide debate,
perhaps 2 dks down and no limit of up.

Just a thought, and it would be easy to add.

The problem with limiting it based on DKs is that for servers such as DragonCat people like me would be able to PVP against 2-3 total people below them in the course of going through a DK and possibly would be able to kill another 2-3 people who ranked above them in DKs....

As a result I can't say that it would seem to work particularly well on less crowded servers then central....
