The current contest running on the Central Server is very complex, but we've run simpler ones in the past.
Since I don't have access to the code, the contests are a way for anyone with superuser access to spice up the game. I figured I could post the "directions" in order to help other servers out.
The contests work as scavenger hunts with the clues or pieces in the kill message of the creatures.
Add a new creature at each level (I've used "Treasure Golems" or "Cookie Golems"). Creatures should not be in the graveyard - you want players to find them in the forest.
Each contest creature should have either a piece of the answer/puzzle or a message stating that players will need to try again. This way the players will know to stop looking at that level.
I've used a list of (magical) ingredients or parts of a code that needed to be decyphered.
Players can either work as individuals (requiring a complete life cycle) or in limited teams (3-5 members at most) to collect the answers/clues.
You may find it necessary to add the clues to the "Naughty Words Filter" in order to prevent players from broadcasting the clues in the game.
This type of contest worked really well for us in the past, and will probably be the most common type of contest we run.
