Hi everyone,
Dragoncat is going to be holding a Contest, which will start on St. Valentine’s Day (Saturday, February 14, 2004) and will end on Saturday, February 28th, or whenever enough people have replied with correct responses to fill our prize quota, whichever comes first.
This contest is intended for individuals, not teams, however there will be some prizes for teaming up. Prizes for individual winners will be much nicer, however. If you feel that you have a better chance to win by forming teams, then feel free to do so. Please contact me or Hammer at start of contest with who is in your team. Teams must be presented to me or Hammer via YoM within 24hrs of game start to be valid contest entrants. Team members are not eligible for individual prizes. No team shall consist of more than 4 players.
People with more than one account will only be eligible for lesser prizes unless only one account is used during the contest period. This is to prevent unfair advantage over other players, since this is technically a “one account per person” server.
Winners will be those teams or individuals that get all of the answers correct (answers must be EXACTLY right, or they are invalid). Prizes will be awarded in order of receipt of correct responses. I.e. first prize will go to the first entry we get with all correct answers, second prize will go to the second entry will all correct answers, and so forth.
Contestants will find various “Question Creatures” which will have questions that player must answer. There are 16 of these creatures (one for each monster level). Your contest entries must contain the questions, what level the monster was that asked the question, and the answers to the questions to be valid entries. Again, prizes are awarded in order of receipt, so the faster you can get these questions answered, the more chance you have of winning.
Please send your entries ONLY via YoM to Hammer or me.
Prizes for individuals:
1st gets one month of use of the LadyPhoenix mount and 100 donator points
2nd gets 2 weeks of use of the LadyPhoenix mount and 50 donator points
3rd gets 25 gems
4th gets 20 gems
5th gets 15 gems
Prizes for teams:
1st gets use of the LadyPhoenix mount based on how many members are on the team
1 week for each player on a team of 4
1 week 3 days for each player on a team of 3
2 weeks for each player on a team of 2
2nd get use of the LadyPhoenix mount based on number team members
3 days for each player on a team of 4
5 days for each player on a team of 3
1 week for each player on a team of 2
There are no prizes for more than 2 teams.
Keep an eye on this post. It may be edited for clarification.
Clarification: Please send in your entries ONLY after you have all contest answers. There are a total of 16. I will not be keeping track of who has sent what individual answers. :)
Another Clarification: If at the end of the contest we do not have enough entries with all answers being correct, we will award based on number of correct answers. Most correct answers will get the prizes. If there are more than one entry with the same number of correct answers, the prize will go to the entry I've recieved first.

It won't matter if you DK or not. The questions are all on certain monsters levels 1-16. You can really start anywhere (i.e. level 9), go through a Dragon Kill, and just finish up right before where you started (level 8 ).

:?: Will there be penalties for wrong answers? losing forest fights, gems, gold etc.

I understand that, but my first thought at strategy was to get as many of the high levels out of the way as possible since progression through those levels is slower... might work, might not... we'll have to see....

No, no penalties. When I receive your answers, if they are wrong, you just aren't eligible for the prize. They die the same way other monsters do. The death message has the question you need to answer. Very similar to the cookie monster contest that Central had a long while back.

[quote="The death message has the question you need to answer."[/quote]
Actually, several answers will be in the death messages, but some may not be. All answers, as of this moment, will come from some part of a monster in the forest.
We have found a possible snag to our contest that might allow cheating. We are currently working to compensate for this. Have no fear though, the contest will still start on schedule. 8)

Quick question of relevance..... what time will the mosters be appearing at? ie. Do you expect the new monsters to start appearing at the start of the 6am EST day or at another point?
LadyPhoenix

We added the new monsters about 1am EST. Somewhere in there, anyway. :) Apologies to anyone that got one of the monsters while it was being worked on. ;) We had a few typos on color code at one point.

Yay!
I guess this means that I still have a chance for a prize even though I gave up on trying to answer #14.....

That's exactly what it means. #14 is the very reason I decided to add that. :)

So far, to my knowledge, 2 people have gotten #14 correct and only 1 person has answered all 16 questions correctly. They will be announced at the end of the contest.

Anyway, the winners will be announced at the end.

There is another that got #14 correct, though that person only answered 10 total correctly. It's posted who did it in the Grotto on Dragoncat. :)

Yup. Mea Culpa on that. I have the email saved, but only checked answers, didn't pay attention to which were correct.
I'll do my best to get the contest tallied right away when it ends. I have people that already sent entries in order. Only need to pay attention to new entries.
I'm still having trouble getting onto the game, due to work issues.

Seriously though, we'll post the questions with answers for all to see once the contest is over, as well as announce here and in the MOTD on dragoncat who all the lucky winners are. :)

Hrm... I wonder how many questions I was actually credited with getting correct then...
-----------------------------------------------------------
Some comments on the questions answers
For question 2, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has said that "the most common fracture prior to age 75 is called a colles fracture (just above the wrist); in the elderly, hip fractures become the most common." (http://www.stayinginshape.com/3osfcorp/libv/r04.shtml). As a side note the ankle is next on their list and I'm not sure where the collar bone comes in...
For question 11, Luxembourg and Norway should probably both have counted as both of thier flags fit the description...
For question 14, while the Roman Emperor Vespasian ruled from 69-79 AD the Greeks had "a colorful public latrine dating to the 4th century B.C. [that] was unearthed on the Aegean island of Amorgos" (http://www.plumbingsupply.com/pmplague.html and quoted similarly on many other sites...). Since this area was already part of the Roman Empire long before Vespasian came to power is it fair to say that he originated public latrines?
For question 15, the official marines website gives the following description of the Eagle, Globe and Anchor logo:
"The Marine emblem - Eagle, Globe and Anchor - symbolizes distant service under the American eagle by air, land and sea, representing our nation's interests 'in every clime and place.' "

Not to sound rude, but the contest is over now. The answers listed above were the answers we were looking for, and arguing the point isn't going to change the outcome.
Fear not, though, as there will be more contests in the future. I'm working on a new one as we speak. It will be a bit easier that the last one, but the prizes won't as grand.

I found all the above answers to.
With question 14, Roman public latrines actually date back to BC (before Vespasian's time) but Vespasian was apparently the first to place charges/fees upon them. So I gathered that Tarquinis the Emporer that created the sewers of Rome might have also been responsible for the public latrines though there was no actual mention of the latrines occuring at the same time.
Agree with the q.11 flag question also .. both Luxembourg and Norway have that flag.
The fractured bone ... I also found that US website but MOST of the google sites stated the collarbone/clavicle so I went with that.
I also found a website that stated that Robert Fulton launched his test steam boat <no name> out of New York.
Shrug ... I still got gems so I'm happy.

The first functional steamboat was on the Hudson river... unfortunately the question said nothing about being functional so the boat launched on the river Seine near Paris counts as the first steamboat...
