So, how did you find our little corner of free-web-based-rpg goodness?

I'm just curious.

I was searching on Google for a game that I could get to from school and the ad was on the side. I clicked on it and viola! Here you guys were. It was an older server though and then someone said there was a new one, so I tried it. Eventually, the old one got blocked from school, but the new one, Central, is still going on, and so shall I! ^.^

someone made a post about his server on an asheron's call forum and I checked out the site. first thing I did was to read the about LotGD page and found the link to the central server there. I decided to try the game out on central since it had more players and I've been hooked ever since.

Ahh, now I remember how it all started...
One day, long time ago, I've found a game called "Dink Smallwood" and I liked it...
Some time later, I decided to check out the "Dink Smallwood" website, and there I've found one more game I liked, it was called "Funeral Quest"...
"Funeral Quest", a good game, and it allways have some cool links, one of these links have send me to LOGD Central Server, And was love at frist sight...
So I created my no titled and not yet mad, MrEccentric...
I'm not thinking that anyone of you would care to now all this things, but for me, was cool to remember how it all started...

my husband was playing with web-based games and set up LotGD on his home server... he asked me to test it and i got addicted in just a couple days... then he started on another project and never had the server up and running... i thought i should stop bugging him about giving me MY game back

anyway, so i went to google and looked for LotGD... and lo and behold, there was the central server!

My husband (Zerohour) used to run a BBS and was searching for BBS games, etc on Sourceforge to set up a "retro" bbs for fun. He found LOTGD, told me about it and the rest is history.

Yes we still run a telnet BBS and yes we still run that "other" lord game but it's not as much fun as LOTGD though it takes far less time to play :D

SourceForge shows the most active projects. One of those days I was browsing to see what's new, and I found this open source game. I was highly intrigued about the presence in SF of the beloved mixture of "Open Source" and "Game" (I was used to play Angband), and I decided to test it for just one day, or at last 2 days, but strictly nothing more 'cause I was (and still are) very busy.

Now I'm not able to remember how many months ago I became God!

Actually this post is mainly about this quote.
"That which does not kill you makes you stronger. That which does kill you makes you dead."

Actually, alot of things that don't kill you make you weaker. Eating raw pork can kill you if it has the worm eggs but if it doesn't it will leave you much weaker and in alot of pain. If AIDS doesn't kill you it makes you weaker. Actually what doesn't kill you makes you weaker is more often than not accurate.

As for the topic it is a little mundane don't you think. Like there is going to be some exciting story of how someone got to this site.
I was playing it one a different site that took it down and is now called the Infektion web site. So, I searched with msn and found the link to central server.

Some MUDing friends talked me into trying EverQuest and joining their guild. I was in Peace By Force briefly with MightyE. As it happens, real life took more of my time and I stopped playing EQ. I still went back to the guild site every now and then. Started looking around and found that he made this game. Looked interesting so I started playing.

I played (and still play) LORD on the BBSes. I first got into the game back in '94, it is one of my favorite games to this day.

I stumbled across LotGD, by doing a seach for a web-based LORD. I am in the process of putting up a website, and really wanted to offer a way to play the game.

Thank you for creating this, and making this under the GPL!

I found it when it got slashdotted in early 2003. A friend of mine and I had played LORD on BBSs so he thought I might be interested. He played a bit and lost interest, but I have played so much that I now have a God on all three main servers! (central, alpha, dragoncat). And a little while back I became an admin on MightyE's alpha server.

One of my EQ guildies discovered it while bored at work one day. He posted a link on our DBs and several of us headed for sourceforge to check it out.

Of the half dozen or so that tried it out, I think I'm the only one still playing.

One of my mates from uni walked in one day, and said "Oi, try this out"..... so then there was about 10 of us playing it. slowly the numbers shrank, until there was one (even i left) but eventually i came back and have been for a month or so. Every now and then, we find new pawns to add to our referrals, but they rarely make a second DK.

This is how I ended up here. During support training for my company's baby account, I was using the free internet access to surf for information on the account's other products when my coworker next to me chuckled. His buddy asked him what he was playing and the first guy answered "Oh, some old school text based RPG on the web," and I went "Wha?" I snuck a peek, saw the URL, and so here I am. I never even heard of LORD. This was back in early September.

I saw this game promoted on a forum and I decided to check it out, that was some time ago and I didnt liked it, that was the old lotgd with only one village, all mounts avaible at any DK, and I believe the best creature to buy was a wyvern, the inn already was included, and the stables, seth and violet and the rest I cant remember, there also was a god with 30Dks with the bio: If you happen to be a farmie please attack me as i'm very rich, if he still plays I wonder what his DK-amount is, but not to get stuck in talk about the old times, I stopped after a while (farmer lvl 3 or 4) but a month ago i wanted to play again and now I think it's very fun, but I didn't understood it a year ago, I found level 1 easy but after it it became harder (just as now), and after your first DK it becomes alot easier especially thanks to the better mounts

Mine was much the same as Valxirion, was playing a cheaper version when my 10 year old asked to play one day. He did a Google to find it and started playing. But his version was nicer with more towns and features and I went, Whoa! Where's this?
Needless to say, I jumped ship ASAP and have been with the Central server ever since. Beside, the conversations and personalities are a lot more colorful  .

A friend of mine that I rp with kept saying you have to check this out. So I looked and went eh.. it's a GAME ... He was like but it's fun just try it ... so I went to create a character but the name I have used for years was taken so that was it. No silly GAME for Me especially since I couldnt even have my own name. Then he tried bribery ... I get perks if I refer enough people ... so I picked a name that was close enough. I'd suffer so he could have his silly perks ... after all what's 4 levels compared to a friendship. So what ??? Someplace it became interesting and I got My first DK a couple days ago ... now you all are stuck with Me

I normally play UO, and since I have moved to New England, all games and software are hidden in storage. I searched around for free RPG I could play while looking for a job and came across the Legend of the Green Dragon. Played for a day, then remained offline for a day. When I decided I wanted to play again, I could not remember the name of the sight. Thus, going to Yahoo search and typing in the name of the game... I came up with lotgd.net. Was this the same? I was sure it was. It wasn't, but I decided I liked this one much better than the other. Any difference? I doubt it, but this one is much more interesting than the other by far!

I was browsing the the devshed php forum (http://forums.devshed.com) as I do most every day and someone ( I dont remember who) had a link to central in their sig. Being an avid EQ/DAoC/WoW (and Swords of Chaos long ago on a BBS) player, I couldnt resist clicking that link to check it out.

I set up a server on my site so I could play with the admin features and perhaps gain a bit more understanding on how the game works, but my play character is on Central, because its just more fun with alot of people.

I think I saw a signature in Slashdot that mentioned the game, so I tried it.

Yet, I think, ages ago, I had stumbled on LotGD by accident or something, but for some reason I had decided to ignore it at that time. (My memory is kind of hazy, but the point is, I *had* heard of it vaguely before I saw the sig in /....) When I got there the second time, I just couldn't joining :) I had played LoRD ages ago in a BBS (not very far though), and was completely amazed by LotGD's faithful-yet-modern approach.

(Using my second character at lotgd.net now - the first one kind of expired, funny that...)

Cant get rid of me easily, that for sure. to date I've played this game through 13 total moves, my entire senior school year, one extremely awful relationship and the start of a recent new one, quiting one job, losing another and now the job I have now, and the finding and losing of my mind multiple times. This is about the only part of my life that has been stable.

I first heard about it from a friend whose nick name is q_werty (yeah, I know many people have this as their nick), you might have heard about him, I heard he was big when he played. I don't think he plays anymore though, that was about a year and a half ago.

About a year ago, I worked at a cemetery in California as a gravesite salesperson. During my free time(there was a lot of dead time, as it were), I would go to underworked dot com, a site for productivity-lessening. that's where I found LotGD. I'm not sure if I'm playing on the server I used then, but...Who cares? I'm having Mucho Fun-o.

I run a web hosting network, and received an application from someone who wanted to run an LoGD site on our servers. I checked out LoGD, remembered my BBS/MUD-playing days from the late 80's and early 90's and joined up.

I was such a technophobe.... until I got the flu and was forced to slump over a keyboard for two weeks feeling too sorry for myself to concentrate on anything else. I'd just finished the Otherland series by tad Williams, which is all about RP basically, so was inspired to idly type that into Google. What came up? Now I seem to be on more than off. :? *shrug* 'tis all good. LG seems to have such a great bunch of people.

I've been looking for a good free browser-based RPG for a long time, and although I love Kingdom of Loathing (http://www.kingdomofloathing) I wasn't completely satisfied for some reason (might have been the effort that KoL can take; it can be a lot of reading and often really counterintuitive). Did a Google search, trolled through some truly horrible games that were high up on certain alphabetical lists of browser RPGs, and finally stumbled across LotGD.

I've only been on for a few days (maybe as much as a week), but I'm loving it; it totally hooked me for some reason. I still visit KoL for the haiku chat (now that college is out for me and I have time to do so), but LotGD is definitely my online game of choice, and I think it will last much better through the time crunch that schoolwork can create.

As far as finding it goes, though, it definitely wasn't very high up on the Google search list. Perhaps an addition to the about pages that talks about what in-game is like? Might help, might not.

I used to run a BBS (Prestige BBS) in the days when the Web was insignificant. I used to have L.O.R.D on it and it was very popular, so when I went from a Sysop to a Webmaster I wondered if Seth had a version for my website. I did a search and voila. I actually wrote an IGM for L.O.R.D, if I ever get time i might tackle anopther one.

Hm, I really thought I had already put my story here, but I guess not...

I used to kill my coffee break by playing an online version of Yahtzee. One day I went to that page and got this message:

"Oops! We can't find the page you're looking for, but here's something else you might enjoy..." with a link to his version of LoGD. I liked it, but forgot to bookmark the page. A Google search brought me to Central, and there I've been ever since. :)

I was playing a junior kind of RPG, and it was having all kinds of crashes from poor maintenance and limited backup - and while grumbling to a friend, he send me a link that was sent to him...
I tried it, and loved it - lots to do, places to go, people to meet - and once I got into a clan or two, I came into my own - stirred things up and really let my imagination bloom.
Got hooked enough that I created an alt to aloow me to play longer and experience more.... and talk more of course!
Thanks for the chance to have fun. :D

I was taking a look at my CJB account, and found one of the servers. Since then, I've been appearing on several servers, and I finally found one that I really, REALLY liked. So I decided to stay there, and only there.

Then, this morning or sometime yesterday - it went down. Don't know why, don't know when, don't even know if my char is still left.

That's when I decided to take matters in my own hands, and create my own little LotGD space.

Hi all, new round these parts..

How did I find LOTRD? (Now known as LOTGD)..

I used to play it all the time when I was a kid as the old school BBS game. Yup, old school, dialup modems connecting to a computer far far away, and going into a 'games' section of a bbs, and then choosing LOTR.

Long story short, I was browsing a website, and I found this, remembering I was looking for a version to put on the BBS I was going to start a few years ago (back when I was 18, 6 years..), I quickly remembered this was my favorite BBS game, and thought I'd look around.. lo-and-behold, there are -several- improvements, and the game is beautiful, and it's on the net now..

The rest? Well.. they say is history.. Here I am on central.

yes... last year, when I first discovered mmorpg I was thrilled by them, so i decided to search for more and this is how I found LotGD, on a site that promoted them.
I remember that it was insane... I couldn't wait for the day to pass... and when I created my clan (then you had to pay 15 gems and 10,000 gold for one) I was so proud...
And after a pause of about one year  I started playing it again, and I introduced my girlfriend to the world of LotGD :D

...i was intrigued by a strange type of online game that i saw an older relative playing, and decided to create a character just to see what it was all about. after a slow start, i was hooked, and long after everyone i know who has tried it has given up in boredom, frustration, or simply being too busy-- i'm still plugging along, on the classic server at lotgd.net, although i have tried others (and not liked any of them but classic, just in case anyone is interested to know)...

I was playing Legend of the Red Dragon out of nostalgia on a tournament server about two and half years ago when someone spammed the flowers arrangement area with a link to a Legend of the Green Dragon game. I thought it rather odd, as we already had a Red one.. why do we need a Green one?

So, I followed the link and said to myself. Oh.. this doesn't have anything to do with what I was playing.. wait.. its based on Seth's game.. its something completely different. I played, it was a small server with a few mods and was blown away by all of the "extra stuff" that wasn't in the original. Naturally hooked, I left the Red one behind in exchange for the Green, Sorry Red :).

Moral of the story, every once in awhile if you're in the mood for it, spam does taste good.

I was wandering the rot infested streets of another game, fire axe in one hand, shotgun in another when the screen refreshed and a new ad came up, it looked good so I clicked on the link and saved it for later more in depth perusal. It had a LordOfTheRings sense to it, it was a few weeks before I looked into it seriously further.

Eventually I wandered on in and integrated myself slowly into the world of Chilly's LotGD, once you get past the die daily world of the Farmboy you begin to feel the power and the fun increase! I brought an army on in with me. We were Rapidly on our way to founding a clan.

Setting down the cellphone averting my eyes from the screen of the world where me and my compatriots came from, to check on the recent database connection server errors concerning us all we found that world was no more. We searched for a new base.

In the cellphone rpg realm I was for a long time known as CatDrgN, a Shade Jester, the name from a pun look what the catdrgn, lol. But before and after that I played as BarnCat, a name almost as old as my own RL name, kinda a nickname from kidhood and first ever CB Handle. After awhile a name becomes a part of you.

Then ya gotta find a place to put that darn name, it's gotta express, it's gotta breathe!

Seeing a DragonCat server was like seeing an ideal zone, maybe not like coming home, but someplace Fitting. It's got less mods and fringe goodies than Chilly's, but basic and fundamental in a good way. There can be too much of a good thing, can be too many things to do at times.

Who knows where the road leads from here, {posting semi in / semi out of character, a playeracter hybrid lol} but this is fur sure a darn good game. :)

However, I did manage to save the page and have it recreated in the DragonPedia for posterity:

I was reading about the history of bbs because I'm a nerd...then went to nethack, then lord...and ended up here.

so yeah...those two lines of obsure text landed me at lengend of the green dragon. I spend WAY too much time wiki surfing. lol

I don't really remember how I ended up on LoGD but I do remember all the different LoGD sites I played on. The best of wich in my opinion was definately Fynralyl's LoGD, but that one just dissapeared one day. =(

@Meskarune Nethack is nice, but I prefer Angband. :D

a friend of mine tried to host a .9.7 game back in 2004 or so, ran into a whole bunch of server related problems, so i picked it up on my side and ran with it, found the sourceforge community and Robert, and started writing my own mods, and the rest is history.

Which version are you basing your mods off of?

I've played LORD on and off for the past few years and didn't realise there was a LOTGD... so here I am :D

(Considering I've been playing a few years doesn't seem to have improved my style either! :D)

Well, one of my friends sent it to me. How he found it I'm not too sure, but I don't usually question him...

well, i was on another sites fourm, and someone mentioned about it, i checked it out and there was lots of people on it but most of them were under 1dk so i thought they wouldnt be good roleplayers (no offense ;)) so then a week passed and someone else on this site who i know from another site told me that everyone was a good roleplayer, but it was hard to get a dragon kill, so then i joined, my story told! (sorry if its too long)

I really have no idea how I found LoGD, it's been a long time since I first started. About six years, if I'm not mistaken. I probably found a link to comfortablydumb.net during a random google search or some such thing.

I used to play LORD on BBS' 15~ years ago. Have found various versions on the tubes via telnet since. This is the first browser version I think I've discovered. Yay!

It's amazing people are STILL finding this game :D It's also amusing that I'm still in the younger end of the people playing, ha!

Oh right, woops I forgot about the profiles on here, I'm in my early 20's so I guess I am old compaired to you.
Congratulations for being under 20 and not illiterate (nowdays), you and the few thousand other young people that can read and write well, should be proud :P

It's nice to see such a wide range of ages around the same environment all getting along, I bet no one expected it all to see years ago when it was created.

I used to play a different text-based game. A player from that game got me to play lotgd for a while. I forgot about it for like 5 years, and now I'm back.

I heard from my friend. It was a different LotGD, so I tried LotGD.com and LotGD.net, and here you were.

My boyfriend found it in google ads while searching D&D related stuff. He started playing and got me into it too. Now I'm more addicted than him

I used to own an old iMac, on a dial-up connection. I googled text-based games and got LotGD. I've got a pretty powerful gaming machine now so I've been playing other games but just recently got back into GD :)

my only internet access is on my p.s.p. (cuz i'm poor) so naturally i've been trying to maximize my online experience...long story short, i've searched the net high and low , and lotgd is my favorite by far.
