Ok...here's an odd request for you: at the 'Users Currenly Online' screen...I'd like to see what it is that each user is currently doing. What screen they're looking at. Just a general description would be good, but anything more descriptive than just 'Online.' For instance: 'In the Inn' 'In the forest' 'Fighting a monster' 'Looking for warriors to slay' etc. And of course...the most ominous one: 'Sitting At The Who Is Online Screen.'
Time since logon would be nice too.
Thanks,
Lady Pirotess

"Brilliant!"
Really, I like those ideas though.

Some people might not like that, so there could be an option in the Preferences area that allows people to see your location or not.

This is why I haven't done this before, it's an idea I'd had. There's performance reasons we might not want to be checking each online user's prefs (because of the way they're stored).

It seems like there could potentially be a significant performance hit if the server is trying to locate all players that way. The easiest thing to do is just YOM somebody and say, "Yo, Charlie, where the heck are ya?".

...well...except that I only want to know where Charlie is and how long he has been on so I can hunt him down and kill him...
Or rather, get an idea for when he'll be available to be killed.

As soon as he doesn't appear in the Who's Online list, of course! :P

I'm sorry to rehash an old forum, but I did a search first to see if this request of mine had been asked before, and this one is similar to what I am looking for.
Would it be possible, at some point, to show who is currently in the town you are staying in? Not the current "List", where you can see everyone and where they are, but a small list of people who happen to be in the Caves/Town Square/Forest Floor right that very moment. Yes, similar to that of the Who's Online list at the login screen, but who happens to be in the "place" you are at right now.
Expand it to Gardens, Dark Horse Tavern, Boards Head Inn, etc. Just the ability to see who is there. It would be nice to be able to see who is about to generate role play or discussion.
Of course, this could be a preference setting to show/hide.
Just a thought.

I like both of these actually. I don't think it would drag much to only say "Degolburg" as where they are - there are other places we do that anyway. As to exactly what page, that would be hefty on performance, I think.
Waugh's suggestion is only a chunk of the List Warriors screen anyway, so that would be quite simple.

You would have to have an extra placeholder in the DB, to hold a person's location... and it can't be the location field, or PvP would get out of hand. :)
You would then have to edit all the current files, to update this person's location... in my honest opinion, it is an entirely superficial idea... that would I highly doubt would find it's way into core, as ideas that increase DB load unnecessarily (pages in the User Editor) are not in Core anymore.
/me just basically reiterated what MightyE had said. :P

At the very least being able to see who is in a chat room/village square with you would be really, really nice. Then there wouldn't be quite so many "Hello? Is anyone here? Nuts, no one loves me" posts. If this added too much to the server load, though, it wouldn't really be worth it.

it could be useful though in the gardens to have on the side there are__ people in the gardens currently because its hard to roleplay alone

And harder still to join a conversation between one or two players who obviously know each other very well and are roleplaying an old story. Knowing if there is somebody else who might start another conversation might be useful (in the gardens).

Lonny (over at dragonprime) coded something like this. I dislike it. It's not going into the core.

I did do a small thing, that just shows the people in the Gardens. Since the coming-out of the module_addhook_priority, it makes it easier to hook to everyhit, but not mess around with server load... as much.
Kendaer, if you would like to see it, just ask. If not, then I guess you don't have to. It is a mere 53 lines... so yeah, not much to look for.

Care to expand on why you don't like it?

I haven't seen the code, but I can tell you it is not usually because of personal taste that code gets rejected. Generally it will not be added to core if
1. the code is not clean
2. it unbalances other core modules
3. it is not within the general feel of the game (space ship modules)
4. it is not something that most servers would benefit from
5. it would cause undue server load
Having worked with Lonny in the past I doubt it would be anything in the first three items.

Heh, whatever.
Whether you've done so in the past or not, the proper place to discuss code is on the coder's forum.
