Superuser Appreciation Day
On May 5, 2003, MightyE made an important decision and contacted me about helping out with the game.
Others (his friends, family, and various people with incriminating photographs) had superuser status, but I was the first player to be recruited and promoted to a management role, and the game has never been the same since.
A lot has happened in the past year.
"Helping out" soon turned into "trying to manage the Central Server so that MightyE has more time to work on the code" - an arrangement that is much healthier for the game in general and for MightyE in specific.
New superusers were recruited to assist with the coding, the management, the editors, and the moderating.
All of the superusers (mods, admins, etc.) donate their time as unpaid volunteers to make the game - and their servers - better.
Most players know only the public side of superusers - of the banstick, the displays of precision deleting, and the powerful renaming stick - but there's a lot that goes on behind the scenes.
Superusers are often in the code fixing or adding things or in discussion about potential additions. Superusers are the only ones beta testing the superuser functions and editors, and playtest their creations before getting player input. There are thousands of petitions that have been answered. Bans are usually reviewed and sometimes even lifted.
All while trying to keep the game fun - sometimes even giving up "playing" the game in order to focus on running it.
In celebration of all they do, May 5 has been designated Superuser Appreciation Day.
So, feel free to add a note of thanks - we do get them every so often, but here's a thread to use.
And send a YOM in game as well.
By the way, now would be a good time to make a donation or buy something from the new store.
Unlike some holidays which are celebrated with a language filter, we're going to give you, the players, a present.
You're getting a sneak preview of some of the most powerful mounts we're working on.
Here are the details, which are based on US EST, so your timing may vary:
May 5: Nightmare is back on sale (40 gems), as is the newly discovered Wild Wyvern (90 gems), a more powerful version of the regular wyvern.
May 6: Mystery Mount #1 goes on sale (100 gems).
May 7: Mystery Mount #2 goes on sale (150 gems).
May 8: All four sneak preview mounts will be removed from the stables
This schedule should give you enough time to test each of the mounts if you want to try them. And you might as well use your gems before Lonestrider gets them. All of the mounts work differently and may not be suitable for everyone's style of play.
And I'd like to take a moment to extend my personal appreciation to all the superusers who make this game possible - we would not be where we are today without you.
