I'm just curious as to how old most of the players are on this game... as for me, I'm 16 (just turned last Tuesday)!

Interesting idea, however, I think you will find you need to up your age group. You need a 40+ selection or older warriors such as myself can't participate.

23. Will be 24 next May, its all not very exciting after the 18 and 21 kinda time...

Although you do get even more delightfully evil as time goes on past then, wonder what I'll be like at 40+?

You don't go up high enough for me, you may need to add a couple more groupings. I've been playing with computers since I had a TI994a, that was early 80s

hmmmm...i still had a TI994a, new in the box up until may 2004.

as for my age...well, cora keeps insisting i am 23, though the additional decades as indicated by my birth certificate will attest otherwise. i am ageless, as only a true fae can be.

so, aye, another couple of age groupings need to be added to this poll.

Not to my knowledge, in my mind wisdom is the most powerful strength out there if used right,

think of it this way, your at gun point do you :
a) wrestle with the person and risk geting shot in the struggle
b) talk the person out of if lower the risk and geting them help

so in the right hands and quote from "School House Rock" = "Knowledge is Power!"

Which language is that?

It's Grelvish, a language very loosely based on Tolkien's Quenya, which is a dialect of elven spoken by the elves of Valinor. Tolkien based Quenya on Finnish and Latin I believe.

<overkill>
Grelvish, (since you got me started :)) was created by the Grey Company (http://www.grey-company.org) for their role-playing enterprises. It is, as I said, loosely based on, and thus often confused with Quenya, but has caught the ire of Tolkien fans for having inferior grammar and such and is by some regarded as a "poor man's Elvish".

</overkill>

I guess that anwers your question :)

But I'm surprised at the youth of the players. I would never have thought the player base was so young, largely because of the high level of intelligence, thoughtfulness and civility exhibited by most.

This is not meant as a dis, but a compliment!

aye, there are many players here who are quite a joy to know and their young age belies their " high level of intelligence, thoughtfulness and civility". once in awhile i notice one in need of a good shaking, but for the most part the player base here is wonderful.

ChattyTrog

This is what I meant, Ace.

I look back over my youth (and since I'm now technically 21, I'm legally past it) and I realize that I wasted so much of my 'youth' doing stupid things. And now that I know what I know I wish I hadn't. I think most people would find this to be true. Now I've had some great years, but the greatest ones have been the most recent.

But, also. Looking back over the years, I really miss the times of no responsibility, when all I had to wonder about was what shape my macaroni and cheese should be. Back then, I didn't realize how nice it was. As I've grown older, I wish I could sometimes go back and relish those earlier years.

Edit: This post was editted to fit your TV.

there's a law against the colelton of certain infomationm from people under 13 in this nation.

because we require that information for the forum, we require that they be 13.

Nothing of the sort is actually required to PLAY the game, so there's a noticiable contingant of those who are too young to use the forum, in the game.

Hey, I'm 25 too, but I feel young. I can't get a decent job, that makes me feel young. All the people I work with are in their 40s, so I feel young. I'm going to be in the same boat as you. I'm going to grad school in the fall. I felt 'old' when I helped TA some sophmore level labs my senior year. It was very easy to feel sorry for them when they'd struggle on something simple because, of course, you struggled with the very same thing.

I need to try to get more paleomag on my site, actually (and I'm springing paleomag and tectonics on my class next week). I was on a business trip yesterday and today, and whenever I go to these meetings, I feel really self-conscious about being young (I know, I know, I said earlier I feel old, but it's all relative). Besides *being* young and inexperienced, I look really young. I'm 25, but look more like 16 or 17. The people I meet at these things talk about having graduated from medical school while I was still in high school, having worked somewhere for 20 years, etc. Only once has someone actually been rude enough to come out and say, "So how old *are* you, 16?" but I recognize the "look" they give you when that's what they want to say but don't think it's polite.

I just turned 20.
Depending on how I dress I can either look 5 years younger or 10 years older.
My professor in my Spanish class asked me how old I was and I said 19. I had to stop and realize I'd just had my birthday. I felt old then. I can't believe I'm really 20. I never thought I'd actually this age. You know how when you're younger, the people older than you are so cool? I never thought I'd actually get to that age where they were so cool. And now I don't feel nearly as cool as I thought they were.

I'm 21, but I feel as if I could easily be 40. Odly enough that's how old my mom is. Though I don't always feel 40, somedays I feel just like a kid. Perhaps in many ways I still am. Most of my friends are in their 30's and 40's, only one is anywhere near my age, and she's 19. I've had several people tell me I look older than I am, and then others tell me I look younger, so I don't know what to belive.

in my case, it was the superbowl, but your mileage may vary.

Some of us were "accidents." When I was born, my big sister had her choice between me and an organ (she plays the piano). To this day, over 38 years later, she still wants an organ. (At 51, I think she's a little old to start playing the organ.)

Which language is that?

It's Grelvish, a language very loosely based on Tolkien's Quenya, which is a dialect of elven spoken by the elves of Valinor. Tolkien based Quenya on Finnish and Latin I believe.

*blinks* Finnish?

Ok, I guess... if I look hard... maybe if I saw more of it I'd agree. Minä olen oikein laiskalla tuulella ;)

Let me see if I can straighten it out for you. I'm 38, my sister is 51. That makes her 13 years older than me. She graduated from High School, the next year I started Kindergarden.

As a side note, my sister is about 3 months younger than our youngest uncle. And she graduated a year before him.

You all make me feel ancient at 49! Fortunately, I - like Fionnabhair- dont look my age.
However, I am looking forward to being able to qualify for senior's discounts in the future and being asked for ID to back it up
That, and full retirement to play LotGD whenever I want!

Hey...just who are you calling old?! Anyone playing this game is either young or at least young at heart. ;)

I know people my mother's age (~50) who act like 20-year-olds!! I love the internet ^_^ (it can also be a bad thing, but I'll ignore that)

When I worked as a cashier, I *never* would have had the gall to ask someone who was asking for a senior citizen discount for ID. I guess it differs based on how steep the discount is!

That's funny. When I worked as a cashier in a grocery store during my very early twenties, I always asked to older ladies for ID whenever they had beer in their cart. Wanted to make sure they were old enough. :D They never complained. Even got asked out a couple of times.

I'm a proud 25. I was a little naughty in my cashier days too. I asked everybody for ID when they bought cigarettes, which annoyed the college students from down the street. Consider it my own personal stand against big tobacco. Later, at a small pop and pop store where I worked, it would really get my fur up when a senior citizen would ask for the discount after I rang them up. On our no frills registers it meant I had to re-ring their order. In spite of that, what surprises me most is when cashiers ask customers if they want the senior discount. On another note, I don't understand women who get offended by being called ma'am. I think it's polite. It becomes downright charming when a child calls me that.

Since when do women get offended at being called "ma'am"? Maybe if it was said sarcastically, but I have never had that happen before...

Syrius
08-18-2005, 09:36 AM
I used to work at a bank, and on calling people ma'am, was more often told off for it than thanked. A lot of women think it sounds old, and prefer you to ask their name. Strange but true.

A lot of people also prefer first name use, rather than Miss Brown, Mr Frank, etc. Which was painful as the policy at the bank I worked at was to use proper terms, such as the Mrs Bob, or whatever.

Either way, I don't see why people get upset over it, when a simple correction will suffice!

Fionnabhair
08-18-2005, 07:03 PM
I don't enjoy being called "ma'am" because I think I'm much too young (25 for anyone who doesn't want to backscroll). In fact, I look so young that when someone working in an establishment whose policy it is to use proper titles addresses me, they say "Miss," not "Mrs" or "Dr," which are correct for me. Oddly, it bothers me to be called "ma'am," but it would not bother me at all to be called "Mrs" or "Dr," probably because those are both titles I have earned. "Ma'am" to me just says "old."

Why do you think banks and department stores, etc have those policies? Unless you personally know your customer, it's impossible to know which title is correct...

Buttercup
08-18-2005, 09:02 PM
I think stores have those policies because it's more professional to talk to someone in a formal way.

While Miss is traditionally what you call an unmarried woman, I think some people feel strange addressing a grown woman in the same way one would address a child.

Perhaps part of what is troubling about these labels is that they are inheritantly sexist. Men in most countries I know of are called by the same title regardless of age or marital status.

However, I think that if one has a strong preference to be addressed in a certain way, then it's one's responsibility to make that clear early in an encounter with a new person. It's unfair to make a salesperson more inferior to a customer by making them feel guilty for an unintentional faux-pas.

Syrius
08-19-2005, 05:04 AM
Why do you think banks and department stores, etc have those policies? Unless you personally know your customer, it's impossible to know which title is correct...

I asked the same question, it's all about competition. If you can go that little bit farther or do that little bit more, the customer will probably stay with you, simply for the service.

Also, at the bank where I worked, I usually received deposit/withdrawl slips, identification, etc, which shows you what to call them. Otherwise, you ask them.

Fionnabhair
08-20-2005, 05:56 PM
It makes sense to me that you would want to address your customer by name, but honestly, (and this may just be me) I feel the salesperson at Filene's who calls me by name after seeing my credit card is being a bit fake. And as for correcting someone who uses the wrong title for me, I'd really feel uppity if I did that - I don't mean to say it's important to me that someone addresses me correctly, just that it feels fake when they try to guess at my name. Maybe it's different in a bank, when you do have more information about someone's title, than in a department store, where you don't know someone's name until the point of sale, and even then only if the customer pays by credit card.

Buttercup

I was unclear. I was referring to when a situation like this:

Salesperson: Good afternoon Ma'am, may I help you?
Ms. Mary Jones: Yes, I need help picking out some sheets. Please, call
me Mary. What are the popular linen brands being sold
right now?

Not this:

Greeter at big box store: Good morning ma'am!
Ms. Mary Jones: Please don't call me ma'am, I prefer Mary.
Greeter (thinking to herself): Jeesh, who cares? It's not like I'm ever
going to talk to her again.

I wasn't so much suggesting correcting someone, as letting them know what they should call you. If a salesperson is going to be assisting you, and it's going to bother you being called ma'am for the entire conversation, then you should just say what you want to be called.

DanaScully

Well, I'm one of the older people on the board, and I was raised "southern". I use Ma'am and Sir a lot, and I expect it (ma'am) to be used to me in the appropriate situations. I don't allow children to call me by my first name, or strangers :) (Ya'll aren't strangers!)

I worked customer service for many years in the moving industry, and every customer was accorded the courtesy (in our part of the world), of being called ma'am or sir, unless they preferred something different. Once a customer says "Call me Mary", then courtesy demands that their wishes be respected. In short, customers, people obviously older than me (getting fewer every year), people in my work chain of command and obvious objects of respect (my mother and mother-in-law for example), get an automatic yes or no ma'am when I'm speaking to them. It doesn't cost me anything and saves me from that creepy feeling that my Dad is going to backhand me from the grave for not having any "raising" :)

It's all in how you were canalized when you were growing up!

Yes, that makes more sense. However, you're assuming that these salespeople have the social skills necessary to make such a distinction. Most that I've encountered don't. Maybe I should shop at nicer stores. :)

That's an interesting point - that where you grew up determines what you're comfortable being called. And obviously your age factors into that, too - maybe in 10-15 years, I won't mind being called ma'am. I don't feel like anyone's "elder," so I guess I don't expect anyone to call me ma'am because they're "showing respect for your elders." Not that I think that means much anyway... just because someone's older, you have to be nicer to them than to anyone else? I think you should be nice to everyone! I'm all for giving up a seat for someone, but I won't do it just because they're older - if they're handicapped, or are carrying a heavy load, or would otherwise benefit from sitting down more than me, I'll gladly volunteer my seat. But I don't really see the logic in giving up a seat to someone simply because they're older than me.

A good point. I wouldn't expect you to give up a seat to me, as I'm quite healthy and perfectly able to stand. What makes my hackles rise is perfectly healthy teenagers sprawled in a seat, when quite elderly people are standing. And I agree, be nice to everyone, good karma always helps. In general courtesy is just human decency. I'll go out of my way to open doors for anyone who is heavily laden, male or female.

Funny, when I was back in Thailand I'd give up my seat to kids, women, senior citizens and anyone who is handicapped or had just bought a heavy load of say, groceries. Basically I stood most of the way (which is very tiresome on Bangkok buses) but that's what was expected from me and I didn't really mind. However, I haven't had a chance to do so when I came to Australia since the buses are never full and my main transportation is my bike. So I wouldn't know how someone here would react if I did get up for them. I just hope people don't give me a weird look or anything. :(

Ithy here, I'm 19 now and I dont believe that your old until you start acting like it. I have plenty of what most call "old" friends and I am with a 26 year old. Furion

I really agree with that point. I am not really old enough to be called Mr. (Last Name), so I always tell people to call me (First Name). But it is useful sometimes when some separation is needed to maintain authority.

That's why I want you all to call me Mr. Furion from now on. :D

A. Cursing or explicit or inappropriate references.
B. Roleplayed violence. Even minor stuff.

We work very hard to maintain a positive atmosphere here, and people get annoyed when it is disrupted. Trust me, many of the other staff will get rid of you a lot quicker than I will. Your learning period is up. You know the rules. Don't dance on the line, you might fall, ok? I don't want to see that happen. Just be overwhelmingly positive when you post, and you'll be fine.

Yeah, I was hoping that a cessation of the ravenous teenage appetite would be one of the perks of legal adulthood. But no dice. :(

You don't look a day past the sweet bloom of youth, my heart. *hugs Kylana tight and kisses her cheek before getting sucked back into the vacuum of real life called work.*

and there's nothing wrong with extending the quotes. especially if it's another quote in honor of your clan. or somthing like that.

I think I've finally reached the point where it's not such a big deal to be a year older, I just turned 21 a couple weeks ago... maybe I'll start celebrating every 5 years from now on :D

27 and still in the Military after 5 years. I should really consider getting a better job before I get myself killed...

hey, when i got off the plane this afternoon in lubbock, texas, where i had to fly in for work in beautiful sunny dry windy new mexico this week, the flight attendant grinned brightly at me and exclaimed, "back to school!" i grumbled for the rest of the afternoon. sure, i should be happy she thinks i'm young, and i admit, at least she was just thinking i was one of the college students from texas tech rather than a high schooler, but still...

sometimes i just want to jump up and down and shout, "I'M TWENTY-FIVE!" which action would totally defeat any attempt at adulthood i might try to make.

Well, most of them probably played LORD fifteen to twenty years ago, so it's entirely possible.
