View Full Version : The mines

I just received a much more severe penalty than I ever have while searching the gold mines. Has this code been changed, or did I just run up against an extremely random occurrence?

I'd have to go with the latter option. The last time the mines code was changed in any way was in mid-February.

There's been one reason while I've avoided the mines for quite a while now, and I think you found it... Luckily I was tipped off before I suffered loss by it

Unfortunately I wasn't tipped off, and it took quite a few gems to replace what I lost...

I also avoid the mines now. :-/

some races have better odds, and some mounts other chances...

but that could be a hint for something else

I've had pretty good luck in the mines, of late. I won't go into the hows and whys, as that could be a game secret, but I'm just glad to have discovered it.

Thanks for the help.. I think that rather than avoid the mines, I'll try experimenting a little.

I've been avoiding the mines for months now because I also discovered that there is a chance - however slight - to lose something very costly there.

Had an ALT who lost something very dear. He recovered, but I'm not such of a miner anymore.

Since I have an ettile, I'd rather not chance it, even if the risk is lower.

I can't think of when the rewards outweighed the risks in the mines...
...But, I might just be less~than~lucky...

Back when I was a farmboy/page the mines were worth it, I didn't really have much to lose back then, it's only once you have something more expensive to lose that it really matters...

White Knight

Without giving away vital game secrets, I can honestly say that the mines have been pretty good to me. That may be due to certain factors, but overall, I usually come out on top when mining.

The severe penalty possible in the mines prevents most high dk players from ever doing it. I think of it as an advantage for low dk players who have nothing to lose. Regardless though I wouldn't want it changed. New players need some good chances that high players don't get

Pwyll
04-23-2005, 12:05 PM
Good point amrothe - and if a High-DK player ever really needs extra gems they can always play a cycle or two as a Felyne. When I did that the lower gold made little difference because of the benefits of having over 70 DKs.

I don't know, i'm a farmie, but i never go into the mines. I always end up getting crushed. I don't see an advantage. But maybe i'm just reeeeeeeeeeeally unlucky.

jdinitials

i have never been penalised for digging up the golds and mines.
maybe because im a farmboy, so it is still easy on me.
The one i fear most now is stonehendge. So unlucky with that

Eris

Now, Stonehendge is where I do pretty well...
Just another case of good for one player, bad for another
(Or just the luck of the randomizer...)

Sir Quady

I prefer the term "evil-ness of the randomizer". And i never find stonehenge. In fact, i rarely find special events at all.

I find Stonehenge almost every day, and I die to it at least once every DK.

Darned specials...

White Knight
04-28-2005, 09:39 AM
I have great luck with Stonehenge. I love that place! I seem to die only about once every fifth or sixth time in. On the other hand, the "rescue the princess" scenario is never good to me. Four out of five times, I'll end up dead, penniless, or with nothing to show for my efforts.

Acemaster
04-28-2005, 05:59 PM
Heh, well I encounter it about 6 times every DK, and one death is all it takes to keep me from breaking my record!

Stonehenge has been kind to me lately - I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop...

Fionnabhair
04-29-2005, 10:01 PM
I usually enter Stonehenge - to me, the risk is worth what I've received in the past!

Rescuing the prince, though... I stupidly almost always try, and get burnt a lot. I should stop trying to save the silly little guy.

My choices in general, for my own reasons. Your results may vary

Mines - never
Stonehenge - 50% of the time if I feel like it, but never on my first few turns
Rescue the Princess - maybe 1 time out of 10
Drink from the glowing stream - never
Follow the trail - never
Talk to the old man - almost never
RSP Gnome - most of the time
Riddle Gnome - always
Gem to FoilWench - always
Gem to the Fairy - always
Smiythe the Smith - only if I have max equipment
Dark Alley - almost always
Stand and Fight Lonestrider - usually
Ferryman - sometimes
Dark Alley - always if my buffs are up

That's all I can think of offhand - I know I missed a few...

White Knight

Myself:

Mines - always (but I know a secret)
Stonehenge - almost always
Rescue the Princess - almost never, depends on my gold
Drink from the glowing stream - maybe 1 in 20 times
Follow the trail - usually (about 50% of the time)
Talk to the old man - always
RPS Gnome - always
Riddle Gnome - always
Gem to FoilWench - always
Gem to the Fairy - always
Smythe the Smith - never
Dark Alley - always
Stand and Fight Lonestrider - depends on how many buffs I have remaining
Ferryman - always

Interesting our different assessments of risk....

Mines - never (dying is bad)
Stonehenge - never (dying is bad)
Rescue the Princess - never (dying is bad)
Drink from the glowing stream - 50% of the time, when HP very low
Follow the trail - almost never
Talk to the old man - never (don't care about charm)
RSP Gnome - 50% of the time (depends on how much real life time)
Riddle Gnome - always (google = free turn)
Gem to FoilWench - never (gems are for perm. enhancements only)
Gem to the Fairy - always (often is a perm. enhancement)
Smiythe the Smith - almost never
Dark Alley - always
Stand and Fight Lonestrider - always (matter of honor, those is bad thieves)
Ferryman - never (dying is bad)

Gem to FoilWench - never (gems are for perm. enhancements only)

Actually, I find the few gems I give her are well-spent when it comes time to face the Dragon... And I always make them back and more.

As for the Specials that can kill you - I find that most of them have benefits that are worth the risk, especially if it's near the end of my game day and I've banked most of my gold. The exception is the mines, which can cost you much more than just your life until New Day. I will never go into the mines again as long as there is even the slightest chance that I could lose what some players have lost there. The ROI just doesn't work out...

Darned straight! I never fail to give Foilwench her due.

Not knowing what some have lost, and knowing what I do know, the mines seem like a good gamble to me. However, I believe that the Rescue the Princess tends to harm more than it helps, so I stay away from that one.

i do tend to give foilwench her gems in ... chunks... sometimes i woln't for 10 dk in a row...

sometimes, i will for a section of them...

usualy she gets more, when i feel insecure in my power

This might be a difference in dk level (you being so far up there, the dragon might be far more difficult), but I've never needed more than the min. skill points.

I lost 320 some odd gems today in a cave in.

THIS IS RIDICULOUS!

The mines have no positive outcome that even comes close to a penalty like this.

JCP
06-23-2005, 03:08 PM
Why is that such a big penalty?

GEMS ARE NOT THAT SPECIAL ANYMORE!!!!

People need to stop thinking of them as precious permanent additions to your character. The rules have changed.

If you take over a thousand gems into the forest, expect to lose hundreds at some point.

There's precious little reason to horde those gems.

Pwyll
06-23-2005, 11:29 PM
Which is why I never, ever, ever, EVER go into the mines. elxBorracho is right, the benefits of the mines do not come remotely close to what you can lose there.

I used to go into the mines when I first started on this server.

But now, I don't anymore because of the risk involved.

And is it just me, or is the mine event appearing more often than the rest? I get it almost once or twice every game day.

SaucyWench
06-24-2005, 04:11 AM
It's just you. In fact, each time we add new special events, the chance you'll see it decreases.

Lanya
06-24-2005, 06:16 PM
I think with few DKs it's worth the risk, there is not much to loose and gems and money to gain!

SaucyWench
06-25-2005, 02:15 AM
Interestingly, there are no specials in the game where the chance of a positive outcome is lower than the chance of a negative one (ie, where chances are you'll lose out).

The magnitude of them, however, still seems to be enough for people to avoid them.

I don't play SaucyWench much anymore, but when I play my 6DK and 2DK players, I'll have a go at all of the specials, as long as it's not early in the game day. Some days, Stonehenge makes me sorry. Some days, the old man rewards me. It's all part of what makes the game interesting. I've already done the race to the first page of the HoF with the other character, so I don't need to spend every turn worrying about getting ahead. It's much more relaxing to play like that.

Or is that foolhardy? :?

I really like stonehenge, really good and really evil
but I take the most special events, when I get them, strangely except the mines, I like my FFturns much more than gems

It strikes me that playing without special events would be decidedly dull...
