View Full Version : Mini Mini-Contest

Are you clever and desperate for 10 donator points? :D Then this is the contest for you!
Not being a creative person myself, I was wondering if any of you can help me think of a good name for my mount.
Suggestions can be anything; lots of you here know me pretty well in-game, so it would be awesome if someone thinks of a good play on my own character (and my many quirks). This could be my name, or my over-fondness of the stocks, or my prospensity to participate in JCP's Hunter's Lodge mischief, or my suicidal nature, or anything. :D
Just so you know, in the past, I have had a camel, then a wyvern. I have a catoblepas now (and am loving it to death), and plan to have a gryphon in the future. I think that's it. If you have any questions, just post them here. Thanks!
All credit goes to Elessa for inspiring me by setting such a marvelous example of generosity with hard-earned points! I would have had a bigger prize, but those are all the points I will have left after renaming :D

Great idea Furion..as for the name, I doubt I would be helpful! (no creativity at all!)
Sergei

Here's my first suggestion: Furious George.
Simple, witty, links with your name. And quite probably the quickest name I could come up with.

Furioff?
Sporkmaster?
Furryon?
Fluffion?
Sergei's idea is nice too.

Give me a holler, Furion, I will give the winner 50 points out of my own personal stash.
Edit - I am rather muddle headed today and that should have read 50 not 500. Sorry!

Well, I suppose you would like a name that appeals to both folks that know you, and, those who know you only by reputation and the limited biographic information. So, even though I don't know you in the game, here's some suggestions that might have more generic appeal.
Prion - that's what makes cows crazy, cows are kinda like mounts, and your a dark kinda person.
Baldoff -- get it? Furry-On, Bald-Off hahaha ha ha doh.
Erinyes or Erinnyes-- historical, alternate name for Furies of Greek Mythology ("the angry ones"). 'Furious', 'furor', 'fury' all have etiological roots to the furies of greek mythology. The furies were conceived of the blood of Uranus when Kronos castrated him. Although not a word, 'Furion' is readily capable of being interpreted as a masculinization of the Goddess Furie. Here's a link for your reference: http://education.yahoo.com/reference/encyclopedia/entry?id=18107
Scourge -- In a similar historical vein, one of the (Roman) Goddess Furie's three weapons. (She also carried a spear and torch and was known as the Goddess of Revenge). Scourge would be good for any beast with cat like qualities because 'cat 'o nine tails' or simply 'cat' was a sailors term for a scourge. (gryphon's tail is spiked like a Scourge?) Another related link: http://www.thanasis.com/modern/furies.htm
Phoneme -- just phonetics. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoneme
Phenome -- more word play; could be any living creature. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenome
Malékith - a reference to Furion from the World of Warcraft. It is largely through the favors of Malékith that Furion remains on favorable terms with the Covenant of the Witches. [Note, I had to translate my source from French into English with babelfish. There might be some innacuracy in my translation. ref. http://wh-background.forumactif.com/viewtopic.forum?t=194]
Please post teh winner or at least announce when the contest is over!

How about "Literally Blind Fury"? You have to be a long-time player (like late 90's) of Legend of the Five Rings (http://l5r.alderac.com) (either as a card-player or role-player) and know about Rich Wulf's excellent parody, "The Hidden Chicken," to know about that in-joke. I tell you, it was hilarious, it was one of those you-had-to-be-there-to-believe-it thingies...

Hey all! Thanks for the great ideas! Lots of them are really funny. My favorite one so far is Ace's Furioff, although I am looking for one I can fall a little bit more in love with. Thanks for all the mythological references, Amygdala, I had a great time reading them. You might be interested to know that Demons in Warcraft went by the name of Scourge, and Furion defeated them.
There were a couple I thought could use a little bit more explanation:
Sporkmaster :D
moug and schmobu
Yurian suggested that I say when the contest is over; I am just waiting for a really good name, so it could be anytime 8) . I didn't think it turn into a big event like this :D Thanks for playing, I'm still trying to think of a name too! I'll post some of my ideas later.

As far as Sporkmaster goes, I just wanted something with spork in it. And the "master" part will always remind you of me. :P
since your bio (on central) says that you are on track to becoming the most suicidal ..... how about:
helpful tendancy the <mount title>
i am not a big fan of the band suicidal tendancies but i saw that in your bio and it just clicked in my brain. the name also i an accurate description of your character (at least from what i have seen) and could be used as an opposite of sorts for your characters name.

Hey, glad you found my research and effort comming up with meaningful names to be interesting. I thought maybe it would be helpful if you had some input on what other people thought of the suggested names, just so you would be prepared for whatever comes down with using some of the other names suggested. The following is a complete listing of the suggestions, besides my own which you so appreciated, and some objective comments typical of a random person:
Furious George -- though unoriginal, it's cute, reminds people of curios george & connotation with monkey. A very common internet nickname. See comments for Blaze, below.
Furioff -- similar to my Baldoff, but not as funny.
Sporkmaster -- well, the guy has an attitude problem and wants you to call him master. Spork? Isn't that like spam? This is not a name, it's an insult.
Furryon and Furrion -- Hrm, people might think you were siamese twins or had a one track mind.
Fluffion -- I thought you sought to have a respectable name?
Moug or Schmou -- rather than asking for an explanation, why not go with pfftie or nefferpfftie if you like these kinds of names.
Noiruf -- enough of this noir.
Blaze -- hrm, how about Blaze332 or Blaze66301?
Vegetables -- ?
Lemming -- see Fluffion, above
Mr. Mister -- uh huh uh huh doh doh. See Furryon and Furrion.
Well, in order to keep my objectivity, I'm not going to comment on the 5 or six names I provided to you along with links concerning their historical, mythological, sociological, etiological, and literary significance. But, I suggest you go back and review them and think about what kind of comments and praise you might recieved if you used one of my suggested names.
Also, I'm sure you know this already and it was just your polite way of saying that you found some of the names described above to be personally offensive, but, it would probably not be appropriate for you to hold a contest and then participate in the contest yourself. I can cite you to some legal language I saw on a box of coco puffs that says you aren't allowed to participate in contests if you make coco puffs. Analogously, you shouldn't participate personally in this contest. However, if you do decide to go with a name of your own choosing and Saucy Wench gives you donor points, please let me know.

your bio (on central) says that you are on track to becoming the most suicidal
I really need to change that :D
I found out a week ago that it resets every DK; that's too bad, I made the top 2% on my last DK :D
Your suggestion was good Muad, thanks! Here were some of mine:
Suicide
Stocking
Whoosh (the noise you hear before my flying mount and I swoop in and steal your brownies :D)
Deimos (How can you not love that self-deprecating (sp?) humor, and that caped avenger avatar :D)
Listo (Spanish for ready; my mounts have been quite reliable, so basically, "at the ready")
Avast (wonder where that came from)
Tag-Team (when we beat up on baddies and the dragon alike)
So basically, some semi-creative ones, and some uninspiring ones. (Glad I have you guys to help me :D)
To clear up Amygdala's concerns, I will be awarding the prize to the best of your entries, even if I pick my own. I think it is fair to pick my own, but (ha) definitely not fair to award Saucy's points to myself, so those will go to the winner as well, for a grand total of (gasp!) 60 points. :D Plus a bazillion more of the kind Drew Carey gives on "Who's Line is It, Anyway?", if anyone has seen that :D)
Amygdala, if you are going to give feedback on other people's entries, please keep it positive. Thanks!

I am most dissappointed that I did not get to hear the suggestion I made- Feralkin- analysed and told how terrible it was! I also think that if you come up with something you like you should definitly go for it, you ought to know what you like the best AND you had some great suggestions! And it is very noble of you to award someone even if you don't choose their name! *applaudes*

"pronto" is italian for "ready" and spanish for "fast", so you get the double reference there, plus it sounds like "tonto", the faithful sidekick to the Lone Ranger. which itself is spanish for "stupid", but hey.

I recieved the following mildly annoying private e-mail message regarding one of my posts here:
Here on the LotGD forums we try to be polite to each other and though you may have not tried to come off rude or offensive it did sound like it in this post:
<snip – Quoting me verbatim>
Ace had no attitude problem at all and was mearly joking with Furion and everyone else's suggests were just as good as yours, and you really had no right to shoot them all down by labeling them that way.
I'm not going to post the e-mailer's name due to the fact that their reply was only mildly annoying, so don't ask.
Anyway, I just wanted to let everyone else know that I'm Grateful you all have a sense of humor!

Vegetables -- ?
What? you have nothing more to say about that name? at least you could have discribed some vegetables, like "who wants a mount that has a carrot nose and salat wings?"
na, well perhaps I take that glorious name for my own mount than... :?

I liked it, anyway. :D
Thanks for the good suggestions, everyone! Special thanks to JR for the language reference (Pronto sounds way better than Listo) and to pinksprinkles for the awesome researched mythological names!

It's possible that I had concerns about being unable to spell the names of common vegetables. But, I don't remember, its all ancient history now.
I'm beginning to enjoy Vegetable. Ya, it's a very good name, actually.

And the winner is.... (Drumroll) ..... Pinksprinkles, for her suggestion of Adrastos!
Kudos to runners-up Ace for Furioff and JRMinga for Pronto.
Pinksprinkles, I'm going to wait a bit to send the points because I recently sent in a navigation suggestion and I want to see if I get any points for it, that way I can increase the prize. I sent the pm to Saucy, though.
Congratulations, pinksprinkles, and thanks to everyone for playing.
