View Full Version : Clockwork Mounts

There have been suggestions in a previous thread that perhaps a Clockwork Mount would be fun.
Couple of questions:
At what approximate level do they start becoming a possible choice?
How do they function in relation to stats?
They start appearing after 30 DKs, but you probably shouldn't get one right away.
Each one relies on an unbalanced approach to spending DK points - players who are well rounded will not get as much of a benefit as those that stack their stats in the direction of the mount.
Spending your DK points in such a manner is risky, and the clokwork mounts amplify both the risk and the reward.
Not as much, as, say, the mi'raj, but that is to be expected. (The mi'raj encourages a suicidal level of risk. Literally.)
Note that the majority of the mounts work best when the mount suits your playstyle - not when you alter your playstyle to fit the mount. If you are already stacking your DK points towards a stat as part of your strategy, then you will enjoy owning a clorkwork mount much more than someone who changes their DK assignment to match the mount.
Of course, the clockworks were designed in response to the ability to reassign your DK points, in order to encourage/reward characters for experimenting with characters that weren't so evenly developed. Experimenting with different distributions should indicate which mounts/style of play you are most comfortable with, if you haven't figured that out already.

Just remember that clockworks are not the only 'right' way to go. I've had countless suggestions to switch to a cassowary. Maybe they're right, I don't know, but I've always enjoyed myself around my gryphon.

JCP, X-Kal:
Thanks. When I first started playing, I ran 6 simultaneous characters because I wanted to understand how various choices affected play. After around 6 DK's I dropped the Alts and have just played 1 character but I still experiment a lot and change mounts fairly often.
Once I get to 30, I'll start trying out the different mount/stat combo's as mounts are presented to me since changing mounts is about the only way to produce any variety.
I appreciate the information.

Whoa, I don't think I'd have the tenacity to run six different characters. And yes, you'll want to keep experimenting with things as you go along - gameplay does change significantly as you go along, and your mount needs may change along with that.
And by the way, I am not above using the "because it is cool" excuse for buying a particular mount :-P

No need to create a new topic , so i'll just ask here : is there a clockwork mount made for characters that ''invested'' in FF's rather than stats?(so far i've seen a scorpion , a cassowary and a bear - and i think the bear might be a ff clockwork)

Yes. What's the fourth one called? *thinks and fails* It's definitely not an orange... anyway there are four, they are for attack, defense, hitpoints and turns.
If your stats are not HEAVILY weighed towards one stat ONLY, you are better off with the Ettile (all four stats roughly equal or ff slightly higher than other three) or Gryphon (ff lower, and DK points spent equally on the other three).

Isn't the last one a clockwork terrapin?

Yes Terrapin. *SPOILER ALERT*
Cassowary: heavy on FFs
Scorpion: heavy on atk
Bear: heavy on Hp I THINK
Terrapin: heavy on Def - or the other way around.
I have only owned Cassy and Scorp - those I know fer sure ;)

You have it correct, Shiqra. I've been using the clockwork cassowary for about 530 DKs now and wouldn't have it any other way. The funny thing is the stat that I have invested the LEAST in is FFs, yet it still serves me quite well.

Well, since I was already heavily invested in FF's I went with the clockwork cassowary and its working well for me.
After a few more DK's I'll probably experiment with a different clockwork mount.
But this brings up a new question...Are there additional mounts available at later levels?

Nah, Skriker and I are more inventive than that ;)
You can blame him when you see the name. For once, it wasn't my fault!

Oh well. At least there will be some interesting times learning how the clockworks are played effectively.
Over time I was hoping that I could collect unique or custom attributes(like my colored name- BadBrainz) or being a Storm Giant(Which I am).
Temporary changes/buffs/mounts, particularly ones that cost me real money, don't have much appeal in a game that goes on forever.
