The news ticker is an experiment, I'm not sure if we'll be able to keep it or not; it depends on a for-pay service to provide real-time updates. But if we stay under a certain threshold it's free.

By popular demand there is now a way to disable the ticker. You'll find it in your preferences. There's also a way to hide your own events from showing up on the ticker (though they still appear in the daily news), and you can change the position of the ticker.

People using the Jade theme or its derivatives probably will find they like to position it at top:55, left:0. It sits nicely under the page title.
