Fantra stuffed her belongings into her leather sack.
"Okay, toothbrush, comb, nightgown..." she muttered, as she bit down on her lower lip. All night nerves had been eating away at her stomach lining. She had never been very far from her village, with the exception of the river that lie in the depths of the forest she and her father use to visit when she was a child. It was all so nostalgic to her but she knew she needed this more than anything she had ever needed. It was a mission of self-discovery and what was happiness without identity? Suddenly, Fantra heard distant footsteps from just outside her bedroom door and there was a knock. "May I come in?" A man's voice echoed in the hall. "Mmm-hmm." "Hey sweetie," her father smiled warmly. She caught a glimpse of sadness etched in his eyes and pain struck her core viciously. Her father's eyes were a crystal blue, the same as hers. People in the village always told her that her eyes were eerie and if she stared long enough at a person she may be able to interpret the language of their very soul. "So, you all packed?" her father asked nonchalantly. His calm aura made her feel at ease. "Just about," she replied. "Fantra, my dear, I want you, no, I need you to take this, please,"he protested, drawing a long thin object from his coat pocket that was wrapped in leather and bound with hay. "Dad..."Fantra began but then was cut off. "Take it." Fantra reached for the unknown object, grasping it firmly with one hand, and began to unravel it. A glint of silver shown through the wrapping and finally a magnificent sword was revealed. Foreign symbols were etched into it's blade and when she had fully unwrapped it and gripped it firmly in her right hand, the inscriptions glowed a brilliant Emerald for a second, then the glow faded as quickly as it had come. Fantra stood agape. "Dad..this--this is Elvish writing, isn't it?" Her father bowed his head. "And it belongs to one of Elvish blood." "But I'm half--" "It doesn't matter." he stated firmly."It glowed, didn't it?" Fantra nodded, her mind spinning like a carousel and her heart racing. "Your mother wanted you to have it, for protection. She knew you would seek her and her Elven Clan one day." "Why didn't you ever tell me this before?" she managed to choke out. "You weren't ready, but now you are and I trust your judgment in those woods and beyond. Just remember everything I've taught you." "Yes," Fantra whispered under hushed breath. Fantra hugged her beloved father goodbye. He gripped her chin firmly as if she were a child once more, "You will come home." It was more of a command then a request. Fantra nodded, swallowing hard to keep from erupting into tears. "Yes father, though I will first discover the lost traces of my Elven clan." Fantra set off into the depths of the forest, naive to the treacheries that awaited her on her journey across land and sea. |
